One of the most successful and provocative African-American directors to emerge in the wake of Spike Lee's trailblazing success, John Singleton consistently lends his creative voice to commendable projects that explore problems unique to the black community. This DVD box set collects three of his best movies. Boyz N the Hood (1991), his impressive, attention-grabbing first film (and, to many critics, still his best), deals with the efforts of divorced father Laurence Fishburne to steer his young son away from the destructive and senseless violence that permeates their South Central Los Angeles neighborhood. Poetic Justice (1993) features pop star Janet Jackson in her first starring role, playing a South Central beautician who shuns the world after her boyfriend is murdered. Rapper Tupac Shakur is surprisingly effective as the mailman whose attentiveness wins her over. Somewhat more ambitious is Higher Learning (1995), an ensemble piece set at a large university where students divided along racial, ethnic, and sexual lines try to find common ground. Fishburne plays a professor who takes the angry student-athlete Omar Epps under his wing, and Kristy Swanson, Jennifer Connelly, Ice Cube, Michael Rapaport, Busta Rhymes, and Tyra Banks fill out the cast. While Singleton occasionally succumbs to melodramatic urges, his films deal with complex issues in generally mature and thoughtful ways, and nowhere is this more evident than in the three early works collected in this box set.
