Editorial Reviews

With the title The Greatest American Hero setting the bar, it’s easy to fall short; even when your theme song, the catchy "Believe It or Not," sung by Joey Scarbury, climbs to No. 2 on the Billboard singles chart. And while this 1981 production from TV giant Stephen J. Cannell struggled gamely to build an audience, ABC canceled it just shy of two years into its run. Still, fans have long carried the torch for The Greatest American Hero, a hybrid fantasy-comedy starring William Katt as reluctant superhero Ralph Hinkley -- quickly renamed "Hanley," after John Hinkley’s assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan in March 1981. The story opens with nerdy Los Angeles schoolteacher Hinkley encountering an alien spacecraft while on a field trip in the desert and being gifted by the aliens with a red costume that allows him to fly, become invisible, and stop bullets, among other things. Although the aliens choose Hinkley for his "moral character, idealism, and integrity," they overlook the fact that he can be clumsy and absent minded: He loses the instruction book that came with the suit and spends the rest of the series awkwardly trying to fight evil while struggling to learn how to use his special gifts. Hinkley is aided in his battle against crime by his attorney girlfriend, Pam Davison (Connie Sellecca), and FBI agent Bill Maxwell (Robert Culp), both of whom know his secret identity. Hero's first season comprises eight standard bad-guy-of-the-week episodes, including the two-hour pilot. In "The Hit Car" Hinkley fights mobsters; in "Here's Looking at You, Kid" it's arms dealers; and in "Reseda Rose," he's up against Russian defectors with secret military plans. The best episode of the season is "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys," in which Hinkley wants to give up the superhero role but is persuaded to stay by the Lone Ranger, as played by John Hart, who held the role from 1952-54. Also included on this first-season set is the unaired pilot to the proposed 1986 spin-off series, The Greatest American Heroine, which starred Mary Ellen Stuart as the inheritor of the super suit, and interviews with the cast. April 25, 2006: This was a show that was on when i was a kid and for years when you expect the re-runs it just never appeared. Irish TV perhaps Anytime of course that the song came on the radio it brought back so many happy memories. If nothing else in the bonus section as william katt points out, the show simply made people happy and thats exactly what I've taken from the series now. It was just good fun and continues to be. Katt, I've always admired and Culp, well he's a just a legend and Connie is the final ingredient that makes this show so special. I wonder if they ever think of coming back for a once off tv special. Great show!

February 26, 2005: I absolutely loved this show. I used to watch it every day it was on, until they cancelled it. It holds so many memories for me, especially the them song 'Believe it or not.' It is pure, clean, wholesome family entertainment without all the garbage you see in shows today. It also taught a morale lesson and had a lot of fun along the way. I recommend this show to anyone who wants to be throughly entertained, and enjoy watching televison when it was something good!
