Editorial Reviews

Loosely based on Jean-Pierre Melville's French film noir Bob le Flambeur, this heist film from director Neil Jordan (Interview With the Vampire, The Crying Game) stars Nick Nolte as Bob, an aging American thief living in the French city of Nice. Addicted to both heroin and gambling, Bob is in the midst of an extended personal losing streak when he rescues a new girl in town named Anne (Nutsa Kukhianidze) from her pimp. When the opportunity to steal a fortune in rare paintings from a Monte Carlo casino comes along, Bob hopes for a score big enough to let him retire from his life of crime. His only hindrances are Anne's man troubles and his nemesis, local police chief Roger (Tchéky Karyo). The Good Thief also features acting performances by Emir Kusturica (director of Underground and Arizona Dream) and Ralph Fiennes. ~ Tom Vick, All Movie Guide All Movie Guide

September 07, 2004: I saw the original 1955 movie 'Bob Le Flambeur' and this remake is so much better. This Bob, the gambler, is a much more likeable character than the serious, distant Bob in the original. He cares about the people around him. Nick looks good with the darker hair and is very much in shape for the role. Much of the original script is intact--just updated to reflect the current French riviera scene. The scenery is so beautiful you just want to go there. And the soundtrack is truly beautiful and diverse with Bono (U2), a french version of 'Black is Black' and some middle eastern rap that is extraordinary. In this version, Bob who was once a notorious thief is now a junkie gambler. After hitting bottom by losing all his money at the horse races, his buddy talks him into a heist at the Casino Riviera in Monte Carlo. Bob decides he has no other choice but to kick his habit (and THAT is a scene to remember!)so he can come up with a plan. But what is the plan for the heist that they choose--the safe or the paintings? The rest of the cast are wonderful. Anne (Nutza) is great as the 17 year old from Bosnia that Bob rescues from a life of prostitution. He likes her but decides that he is too old for her and refuses to take advantage of her. She, of course, feels differently and tries to change his mind. He eventually rescues her and teaches how to gamble at the Casino. Boy do they look good in the final scenes when they dress up to go to the casino! Paulo, Angel and Phillipa aid Bob in the heist. Remy (the pimp) and Said (the drug dealer from Algiers) try to get Anne to tell them what Bob is up to so they can turn him in to Roger (the tireless police detective who actually likes Bob and is trying to stop him from committing the heist and thus avoid yet another stint in jail). But Bob outwits Roger at every turn. The ending in this updated movie is so much better than the original (where Bob ends up going to jail but with enough winnings to pay for a good lawyer). But I will not give any more away. It is the best that Nolte has done in a long time and well worth the watch.

October 08, 2003: worth watching as a heist movie set on the French Riviera...but the real treat is the fabulous soundtrack.
