Editorial Reviews

The wonderful Film Noir Collection brings to DVD five classics of the genre in superb editions, each graced with poster-worthy, period-flavored cover art. Among the most distinctive and clearly defined cinematic styles, film noir tales are built around characters who are desperate to live the American Dream yet doomed to failure. The cinematography in these black-and-white dramas makes the most of shadows and contrasts, a technique that underscores the tensions among the characters. The films here include: Murder, My Sweet (1944), featuring Dick Powell as Philip Marlowe, adapted from Raymond Chandler's novel Farewell, My Lovely, with a DVD commentary by film noir expert Alain Silver; The Set-Up (1944), starring Robert Ryan as a down-on-his luck fighter and boasting a commentary by directors Robert Wise and Martin Scorsese; Out of the Past (1947), the source for 1984's Against All Odds, featuring Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, and Kirk Douglas, with a commentary track by film noir expert Jim Ursini; the surprisingly dark Gun Crazy (1949), a Bonnie and Clyde forerunner offering Peggy Cummins and John Dall as a couple on a crime spree, served up with commentary by film noir expert Glenn Erickson; and finally The Asphalt Jungle (1950), a noir masterpiece from director John Huston about an ill-fated jewel heist, with costar James Whitmore joining in the commentary by USC cinema history professor Drew Casper.
