Editorial Reviews

Prime-time TV’s Dukes was the apotheosis of ‘70s Redneck Chic, coming on the heels of Smokey & the Bandit and country music’s newly reasserted prominence. This revisionist film version arrives as Jeff Foxworthy has become one of stand-up comedy’s elder statesmen, and the line between country and pop has been blurred past recognition. It’s also the latest manifestation of Hollywood’s bewildering fascination with Boomer-TV staples. The basics remain the same: Duke cousins Bo (Johnny Knoxville) and Luke (Seann William Scott) are still delivering moonshine for their Uncle Jessie (Willie Nelson) and staying one jump ahead of Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane (M. C. Gainey), the tool of corrupt Hazzard County big-shot Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds). Jessica Simpson has no problem filling out cousin Daisy Duke's cutoff shorts. The Duke boys still drive that familiar red car, the General Lee, and since it’s still a 1969 Dodge Charger, we’re left to assume that Hazzard County must be an elephant’s graveyard of spare parts. The plot, involving Hogg's attempt to take away the Duke family farm, is merely a delivery vehicle for car chases, explosions, and endless shots of Daisy's Daisy Dukes -- all set to a thunderous soundtrack of classic southern rock. Knoxville and Scott play the good-ole-boy routine to the hilt and obviously love every minute of it. Don’t expect them to tackle social mores -- this is The Dukes of Hazzard, after all. What more do you want? Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble
