Editorial Reviews

Certainly among any serious TV historian's top ten all-time sitcoms, The Dick Van Dyke Show combined a great cast, superior writing, and a conceptual framework that remains sturdy today: the star, at home and at work. Dick Van Dyke is Rob Petrie, head comedy writer on the fictional Alan Brady Show, where his compatriots are the fireball comics Morey Amsterdam and Rose Marie (as Maurice "Buddy" Sorrell and Sally Rogers, respectively). The estimable Richard Deacon portrays Melvin "Mel" Cooley, Alan Brady's lackey, with a patented delivery that falls somewhere between Jeffrey Tambor's Hank Kingsley (The Larry Sanders Show) and former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer. Rob goes home at night to New York City's Westchester suburbs, where his wife, Laura -- Mary Tyler Moore, a gem right from the start -- and six-year-old son, Ritchie (Larry Matthews) provide their loving breadwinner with lots of hilarious complications. Although it would be several seasons before Van Dyke and Moore earned Emmy Awards for their creations, the series pretty much hit the ground running, making this first-season set a welcome DVD arrival indeed. The 30 first-season episodes, all included here, are:

  • "The Sick Boy and the Sitter" -- Stacy Keach guest-stars
  • "The Meershatz Pipe"
  • "Jealousy"
  • "Sally and the Lab Technician"
  • "Washington vs. the Bunny"
  • "Oh How We Met the Night That We Danced"
  • "The Unwelcome Houseguest"
  • "Harrison B. Harding of Camp Crowder, MO"
  • "My Blonde-Haired Brunette"
  • "Forty-Four Tickets"
  • "To Tell or Not to Tell"
  • "Sally Is a Girl"
  • "Empress Carlotta's Necklace" -- Gavin MacLeod, future "Murray" of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, guest-stars
  • "Buddy, Can You Spare a Job?"
  • "Who Owes Who What?"
  • "Sol and the Sponsor"
  • "The Curious Thing About Women"
  • "Punch Thy Neighbor"
  • "Where Did I Come From?"
  • "The Boarder Incident"
  • "A Word a Day" -- Ubiquitous character actor William Schallert guest-stars
  • "The Talented Neighborhood" -- Future My Three Sons fixture Barry Livingston guest-stars
  • "Father of the Week"
  • "The Twizzle" -- Future Chico and the Man "man" Jack Albertson guest-stars
  • "One Angry Man"
  • "Where You Been, Fassbinder?"
  • "The Bad Old Days"
  • "I Am My Brother's Keeper" -- Jerry Van Dyke guest stars
  • "The Sleeping Brother" -- Jerry Van Dyke guest-stars again, and Carl Reiner makes his first appearance as Alan Brady
  • "The Return of Happy Spangler" Barnes & Noble

January 09, 2009: I used to watch "The Dick Van Dyke Show" on TVLand, because it's about 40 years before my time. However, to my dismay, TVLand quit showing these fantastic episodes. I was thrilled to be able to see them all on DVD. The quality is excellent and it was interesting to see some of the original promos and commercials. I recently bought the next three sets too! The innoncence and fun of the show make it perfect for the whole family!

Outstanding version of a real classic!by Anonymous

December 26, 2003: I couldn't wait to pop in my DVD's Christmas Day. To my delight, the picture and sound quality is excellent. All of the episodes are full length with nothing cut out like shown on Nick or TVLand. The commentary, Emmy awards telecast snippet, and commercial spots are excellent as well. Great buy for a great show!
