Kirsten Dunst stars in this drama as a Jewish teenager who doesn't care much about her family's religious heritage until she's transported back in time to Poland in 1941, where she learns a valuable lesson about the struggles of her family -- and her people. Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

January 09, 2008: I am currently watching this movie in my Social Studies class. It "true to its roots" does have some disturbing/upsetting scenes that I think littler children should stay clear of. It depicts a true and devastating time in the world when the Nazi Germans ruled the majority of Europe, with a modern and mystical twist. Kirsten Dunst plays an eighteen year old named Hana, who couldn't be more unwilling to take part of her family's Jewish traditions. After drinking too much wine, she passes out while opening the door for Elijah "a Jewish tradition", and she is transported back to 1941 with her cousin, Rifka "spell check". They are captured and relocated to the East "a concentration camp", and the horrors of the Holocaust are relived throughout the "years" spent at the camp, and Hana develops an extreme sense of appreciation towards the traditions and stories she always passed up. I highly recommend this movie, but I'd say it's rather sad and they do show hanging and bleeding and more, so littler children shouldn't watch this movie. I hope you enjoy it.
