Over the past decade, the Dave Matthews band has undergone a healthy sonic evolution. After first making waves as a frat-boy-friendly jam band, DMB skyrocketed to popularity in the mid-'90s, selling out huge arenas across the country with an explosive fusion of folk, jazz, and classic rock. Moving beyond contemporaries such as Hootie and the Blowfish and the Spin Doctors, the band has experimented relentlessly -- with slick, glossy production techniques on Everyday and a more acoustic, introspective sound on the subsequent release Busted Stuff. The track list from Live at Folsom Field, shot at the University of Colorado in July 2001, features tunes from every phase of DMB's career, including "What Would You Say," the breakout hit from 1994's Under the Table and Dreaming, all the way up to "Big Eyed Fish" from Busted Stuff. This electrifying two-and-a-half-hour performance is the band's third DVD offering, with Listener Supported and Dave Matthews Band: The Videos 1994-2001 having already gone platinum. Live at Folsom Field is a more than worthy follow-up.
