Editorial Reviews

He made just three films over a period of less than two years, but few movie stars before or since have had the impact that James Dean had on American popular culture. A Method actor whose ability bordered on the preternatural, Dean was the primary exponent of disaffected youth in Hollywood movies of the mid-1950s, a period during which Americans first began to seriously question the prevailing social and cultural order. Slight of frame but undeniably handsome (albeit in a sensitive sort of way), Dean radiated charisma; despite his lack of practical experience he dominated the screen in almost every shot, his performances often overwhelming those of far more experienced actors. This new collection features extras-laden Special Edition DVDs of his three legendary films: Elia Kazan's East of Eden (1955), the John Steinbeck adaptation that gave Dean his first starring role as one of two brothers constantly vying for their father's love and attention; Nicholas Ray's Rebel Without a Cause (1955), which teamed Dean with Natalie Wood and offered a powerful exploration of youthful alienation in the post-World War II era; and George Stevens' Giant (1956), the epic adaptation of Edna Ferber's sprawling saga of Texas oil barons, which costarred Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor. Each of these movies is a classic in its own right, although it's fair to say that neither Eden nor Rebel would have attained that distinction without Dean's presence. A truly remarkable performer, one often imitated but never really equaled, James Dean remains a compulsively watchable star. His brief but distinguished career is thoroughly documented in supplemental features on these superbly produced DVDs, which will bear repeat viewings at regular intervals. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble

August 24, 2005: James Dean has inspired countless numbers of actors, musicians (including Elvis and The Beatles), and even ordinary folk like myself. His ability to reach deep inside of himself and express true emotion in his acting will give anybody the chills. My absolute favorite scene is in "East of Eden", when Dean's character's father rejects his birthday present and through his own improv, Dean desperately tries to hug his father after being crushed by rejection.
