This 2005 TNT summer-replacement series from Nip/Tuck executive producers Michael M. Robin and Greer Shephard quickly attained popularity, due to its exemplary scripts and fine ensemble acting. The first TV vehicle for three-time Golden Globe nominee Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer has given this terrific actress the showcase she has long deserved. As Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, the CIA-trained interrogator who heads the LAPD's elite Priority Homicide Division, Sedgwick combines southern charm and persuasiveness with aggressive, hard-nosed work habits and impatience with department politics. Brenda isn't the type who believes in "go along to get along" -- she isn't afraid to step on toes when she feels it's necessary, which initially doesn’t sit well with her comrades. However, fellow cops Jon Tenney, G. W. Bailey, Corey Reynolds, Robert Gossett, and J. K. Simmons all begin to appreciate her unique talents as the season progresses. The Closer's first season ran to just 13 episodes, and each one is a gem. In "Good Housekeeping," Brenda defies conventional wisdom when a known sex offender is automatically suspected in the rape and murder of a housekeeper's daughter. "Fatal Retraction," an especially strong episode, has Brenda targeted by the deranged killer for whom her team is searching. And the season finale, "Standards and Practices," finds the irrepressible PHD leader plowing ahead on a high-profile investigation while shrugging off a grievance complaint that could conceivably end her career.
