May 31, 2006: Either in it's three-part version in Superman-The Animated Series or in this version, this is a very good take on the first meeting between Superman and Batman. It compares their methods and rationales, their separate personalities and even the type of adversary that they encounter. As the story evolves, we find that their only connection is Lois Lane--who falls for Bruce (much to the chagrin of Clark). In the end, while we don't find them to be the best of friends, the two heroes come to an understanding and admiration of each other, in spite of their different methods. There are some magnificent contrasts in the vocal performances--Tim Daly's flat, ironic and noble Clark/Superman with the urbane, chilling Kevin Conroy doing his usual outstanding work as Bruce/Batman then throwing Dana Delany's wisecracking Lois Lane between them. This also is the case with Clancy Brown's Lex Luthor and Mark Hamill's Joker. Much of the animated work done by Warner Brothers in the 1990s wasn't done specifically for young viewers--there were many double entendres in the more humorous material (Animaniacs and Freakazoid), and of course Batman:The Animated Series especially since B:TAS broke the super-hero cartoon genre down and totally rewrote it. This movie is a great example of how far comics have come as storytelling--allowing the heroes to show anger, mistrust and jealousy toward one another but also coming to compromises with each other--not friends (at this point), but certainly earning each other's trust and respect. Good storytelling, and that recommends this movie more than anything else.

January 23, 2004: My 6 year old boy wanted to buy this, but I thought I would rent it first to check it out. I'm glad I did. It is totally inappropriate for children of any age. At the very least, the plot is too complicated and the dialogue too sophisticated for young children to understand. There are many other reasons I don't like this movie for children, here are just a few: The movie features women getting punched in the face and knocked unconscious. Lois Lane is shown in her very scant nightie talking on the phone at night to a topless Clark Kent. The superheroes invade a nightclub to find some criminals, who are watching dancing girls, again barely dressed, onstage dancing in cages. There is plenty of violence throughout. I won't list all the inappropriate words, images, and ideas, but there are many more. On a another really basic level, Superman and Batman are rivals throughout the movie, not allies as they are in Justice League. And their rivalry is never resolved. In fact, Bruce Wayne threatens Kent at the very end of the movie. Not family fare! This website states the movie is NR, but the copy I rented has a G rating!!
