Editorial Reviews

One of Disney's surest hands, Norman Tokar (Big Red, Savage Sam, The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit), directed this 1975 live-action western comedy that remains one of the golden nuggets in the Disney mines. Bill Bixby stars as Donovan, a gambler who unwittingly becomes the very reluctant guardian of three "runny-nosed kids" who happen to possess the deed to a supposedly worthless gold mine. Don Knotts and Tim Conway are fortuitously teamed as Theodore and Otis, two hapless crooks who effortlessly steal every scene they're in. The able supporting cast includes some welcome familiar faces, including a buckskin-clad Susan Oliver as the love interest, Harry Morgan as the town barber/sheriff/judge, and Slim Pickens as a bank robber. Unjaded younger viewers will treasure this G-rated comedy. Like the film itself, the audio commentary contained on the disc really comes to life whenever Conway and Knotts pop up. Donald Liebenson, Barnes & Noble

March 10, 2006: I was only allowed to see "clean" movies when I was a child, so the older movies were usually what I was given the option of seeing. I hated most of them, but one that stood out was The Apple Dumpling Gang. You just WILL NOT be sorry you bought this. Don Knotts and Tim Conway make an unbelievale pair and deserved some kind of award for this movie. The relationships were slowly meshed, but the action and comedy never let up. Bill Bixby's best. Trust me, I'm 25 and anyone from 8 to 80 will get a kick out of this movie.
