In 1974, aiming to capitalize on the nostalgia wave then sweeping the country, producer Jack Haley Jr. persuaded MGM (celebrating its 50th anniversary that year) to let him make a film comprising clips culled from the studio’s classic musicals. Haley assembled most of the survivors of MGM’s Golden Age -- among them Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Jimmy Stewart, Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Mickey Rooney, {|Elizabeth Taylor|}, and Donald O’Connor -- and had them introduce memorable musical numbers from Singin’ in the Rain, An American in Paris, The Band Wagon, Show Boat, and others going back as far as 1929’s Broadway Melody. At 132 minutes, the film raced by, leaving critics and audiences breathless for more, and That’s Entertainment! wound up out-grossing most of the studio’s other offerings that year. It remains the best movie of its kind, a bright and bouncy tribute with more highlights than we could possibly list here. The inevitable sequel followed in 1976, this time with Astaire and Kelly hosting. Although the first film had skimmed most of the cream, much delicious material remained to be compiled, and Part II went the extra mile by incorporating previously unseen numbers deleted from various films. This compilation, too, was a resounding hit. The success of the That’s Entertainment films on video encouraged MGM to take a third bite of the nostalgia apple in 1994. Part III -- hosted by June Allyson, Cyd Charisse, Lena Horne, Howard Keel, Ann Miller, Esther Williams, and others -- relies even more heavily on outtakes and employs some clever touches, such as showing Charisse and Joan Crawford dancing to the same pre-recorded number in films made nearly 20 years apart. A Fred Astaire dance sequence is shown in split-screen, side by side with another version not used. Judy Garland is represented by “Mr. Monotony,” an Irving Berlin song inexplicably cut from Easter Parade. The third film is perhaps most appealing to film buffs interested in rare material and behind-the-scenes history, but the first two films have the stronger lineups, excerpt-wise. Of course, we’re quibbling: All three movies are sensational, and we encourage fans of classic Hollywood fare to snap up this newly remastered DVD box set with alacrity. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble
