Editorial Reviews

A frothy sitcom that recycled old plot situations and character types but gave them a fresh spin, That Girl stood head and shoulders above most of its competitors by virtue of the outstanding performances of its stars: effervescent Marlo Thomas and Ted Bessell, an underrated second banana who frequently overshadowed his top-billed leading lady. Thomas plays Ann Marie, an aspiring actress who moves to New York City, gets an apartment, and initially works as a waitress while establishing herself in various small roles and modeling jobs. Bessell plays her boyfriend, Newsview magazine reporter Don Hollinger. Their first meeting takes place in the initial episode, "Don't Just Do Something, Stand There," in which Don mistakes Ann for a damsel in distress after spotting what appears to be a holdup. Bessell dominates "Anatomy of a Blunder," which is perhaps the best first-season episode. In it, he accompanies Ann on a trip back home; a series of mishaps turns him into a walking nightmare that makes a very poor first impression on her family. The tables are turned in "Soap Gets in Your Eyes," when Ann fails to impress Don's visiting parents. Part of the fun in watching the opening season of That Girl is picking out the various supporting players who would become stars in their own right, including Carroll O'Connor (hilarious as an opera singer in "Tenor's Loving Care"), George Carlin, Teri Garr, and Dabney Coleman. June 08, 2009: This is a great look back into the era of the 1960's. Marlo Thomas, as always, is a joy to watch. The aspect I most appreciated were the comments from Marlo Thomas on how "That Girl" was produced. She is a very clever producer and it shows in her work.

"That Girl" truly encompasses how women's perspectives on who and what they could be was beginning to change. Women wanted an independence of their own to seek out professional careers, make their own way, and become a productive part of society within the work force.

The character portrayed by Marlo Thomas, Anne Marie, sertainly takes on a personality all her own but with aspects from the actresses own real life.

Anne Marie is endearing, honest, hard working, and still just like any other girl of the 1960's, with the exception of wanting to hold off on marriage. She enjoys her independence and is very successful in her endeavors, with or without her boyfriend.

September 08, 2006: One of the episodes alerted me to "reverse sexism," behavior (heckling a male comedian) allowed in a woman that wasn't allowed in a man (heckling a female comedian)! Thank-you Ms. Thomas!
