The Teen Titans -- Beast Boy, Cyborg, Raven, Robin, and Starfire -- are in Tokyo, but they're not on vacation. They are in hot pursuit of shadowy figure Brushogun, who sent one of his minions to destroy the Titan home and headquarters. Despite the local police commander's insistence that Brushogun is an urban legend, Robin investigates further. That's the cue for Brushogun's army of manga-inspired, ink-stained monsters to lay waste to Tokyo, and for Robin to run afoul of the law and be thrown in jail for a murder he did not commit (and which, perhaps, did not even happen). Originally broadcast on Cartoon Network, this full-length feature is impressively animated and directed, with bravura action sequences. Trouble in Tokyo is also super funny, with visual gags and clever writing that do justice to each character (the montage of the Titans packing for their Japan trip is a real hoot). More casual Teen Titans viewers, or anyone not proficient in anime or Japanese pop culture, might find themselves at a disadvantage, with in-jokes that will be lost in the translation. But it doesn't take long to establish the character dynamics. Robin, for one, is reluctant for himself and "best friend" Starfire to "be something more than heroes." By film's end, their relationship issues are satisfyingly resolved. And be sure not to miss the end credits, during which each Titan takes a verse on the Titans theme song. Let's just say that Raven, with her Janeane Garafalo-like deadpan, will not be winning any Teen Idol competitions. Donald Liebenson, Barnes & Noble
