Editorial Reviews

Hard-boiled, self-educated newspaper editor Clark Gable turns down an opportunity to lecture before a night-school journalism class, publicly ridiculing the notion that the art of news writing can be taught. Gable's publisher, sensing a good story, orders the recalcitrant editor to appear at the lecture. Upon entering the classroom, Gable overhears journalism teacher Doris Day, the daughter of a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, condemn Gable's attitude towards higher education. Intrigued by the lovely Day, Gable enrolls in her class under an assumed name. He quickly goes to the head of the class (after all, he's had more experience than all the other students combined), then begins a campaign to romance Day. But there's a fly in the ointment: Day's fiance Gig Young, who gives an Oscar-calibre performance as a smug know-all. Likewise stealing every scene she's in is Mamie Van Doren, playing an exotic dancer who's set her sights on Gable. Fay and Michael Kanin's sprightly screenplay for Teacher's Pet manages to steer clear of any and all potential cliches. Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

September 23, 2005: Doris Day plays a college journalism teacher--back in the days when students wore coats and ties to class. Clark Gable plays a hard-boiled city editor who becomes her star pupil--here an older version of his cynical reporter in "It Happened One Night". Director George Seaton follows Frank Capra's footsteps, and this sparkling, romantic comedy written by Michael and Fay Kanin is a snappily paced romp where the laughs come often. Gable and Day spar entertainingly as "the old pro and the egghead" with different ideas about reporting. Gable gives Day her sexiest kiss, to which she reacts with classic indignation before going weak in the knees. The supporting cast is fine, especially Oscar-nominated Gig Young as a tipsy playboy and Mamie Van Doren who makes an all-too-brief appearance as Gable's girlfriend, but she's on long enough to perform "The Girl Who Invented Rock and Roll," which Day reprises later, with her own va-va-va-voom! February 04, 2002: Doris Day and Clark Gable, both step out of their usual character roles. This movie proves their capabilities as diverse, talented actors. Gig Young is also wonderful. Serious, yet very funny. Don't however, be deceived by the video jacket, the movie has NOT been colorized.
