Editorial Reviews

"NASCAR culture" practically begs for satire; and with this delightfully silly movie, Will Ferrell happily provides it. Ferrell stars as Ricky Bobby -- scion of a speed-crazy family, undisputed king of the track, and, well, kind of a jerk. He’s fond enough of his bubble-headed blonde wife (Leslie Bibb), his momma (Jane Lynch), his boys, and even his best friend -- fellow driver Cal Naughton Jr. (John C. Reilly). But ole Ricky isn’t exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer, and when a hotshot French Formula One driver (Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen) goads him into taking unnecessary chances, he gets careless and cracks up, literally and figuratively. Without the strength of character to endure reversals of fortune, Ricky turns into a nasty, drunken bum, just like the father who abandoned him (Gary Cole). Director Adam McKay, who co-wrote the script with Ferrell, shoots Talladega Nights as a twisted cross between a “mockumentary” and a conventional narrative film; it’s clear that the actors are frequently improvising, lending the proceedings a bizarre cinema vérité feel. It’s comedy king Ferrell’s show, of course, but the supporting players contribute their share, especially Cohen, whose heavily accented Frenchman gets played for more than a few chuckles. In this breeze of a comedy, easy laughs come around as quickly as the turns at Martinsville Speedway. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble

December 13, 2006: ....but I must admit that the scenes with Ricky Bobby's unruly children badmouthing granpa were a bit un-nerving to me, but grandma set them kids on the straight and narrow path. Otherwise, this movie is disgusting at times but truly a great comedy. Will Ferrell has done it again!
