Based on a true story, Take the Lead features Antonio Banderas as Pierre Dulaine, a dance instructor who made a unique contribution to the New York City school system. Inspired by the unnerving spectacle of a student (Rob Brown) pounding a teacher’s car with a golf club, he volunteers his services to the school’s hard-nosed principal (Alfre Woodard), offering to teach ballroom dancing to the underachieving, troublemaking regulars in detention. Not surprisingly, he initially meets with resistance from the kids. When joined by a sexy colleague though, Dulaine proves that such dances as the tango are far more sensual than popular hip-hop moves. At first recalcitrant, the vulgar, rebellious students eventually come to respect Dulaine’s passion for dance and embrace his transformative work ethic. Banderas holds the movie together and gives it strength: His compelling characterization of the committed instructor -- impeccably groomed, stylish, graceful, and resolute -- is further bolstered by fine performances by Woodard and Brown. Take the Lead, which contains more spirit than narrative surprises, climaxes with a dynamic ballroom dancing competition, highlighted by eye-popping choreography. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble
