Out of all the network sci-fi shows that suffered from the Writers Guild of America strike in 2007-8, only one was able to increase its audience during the following season: Supernatural -- and with good reason. At the end of Season 3, Dean's (Jensen Ackles) deal with a demon had come due, and he was sent to Hell. In the premiere of Season 4 (2008-9), Dean mysteriously returns, and his brother Sam (Jared Padalecki) and family friend Bobby (Jim Beaver) are at a loss to explain why. The answer, as they discover, comes directly from Heaven: Castiel (fan favorite Misha Collins), an angel sent by God to rescue Dean from damnation. Castiel explains that the demon Lilith (Katherine Boecher) is trying to free Lucifer, and Dean must be the one to stop the Apocalypse. As if that isn't enough, Sam has been secretly building his powers with the help of the demon Ruby (Genevieve Cortese), and Dean doesn't realize the full extent of his brother's fall into darkness until the episode "The Rapture." Along with the epic Heaven vs. Hell story arc of the season, there are also notable standalone episodes, including: "In the Beginning," in which we learn the truth about the Winchester family; "Wishful Thinking," wherein wishes come true to disastrous results; and "Sex and Violence," featuring a siren who casts a spell that affects both brothers. With angels, demons, fraternal conflict, and an apocalypse, the 22 episodes of Season 4 are the pinnacle of the Supernatural series so far. Christina Urban, Barnes & Noble
