Christopher Reeve's final Superman film tackles the serious subject of nuclear disarmament and brings back Gene Hackman as the Man of Steel's archenemy, evil scientist Lex Luthor. While Superman concentrates on disposing of nuclear weapons stockpiled all over the world, Luthor creates an evil, superpowered counterpart to do battle with his nemesis. The resulting clashes spread from country to country and even to the surface of the moon, where Krypton's sole survivor seems unequal to the struggle. Reeve, who co-wrote the original story, is more sober than usual in the title role, perhaps befitting his level of commitment to the movie's topical subject matter. Margot Kidder returns as Lois Lane, but she's overshadowed by Mariel Hemingway, who plays the perky daughter of the new Daily Planet owner and sets her sights on Clark Kent. Hackman's Luthor is, as usual, delightfully zany, and his presence adds welcome flair to the proceedings. Superman IV brings the Reeve series to an explosive conclusion, and its high-octane action sequences will more than satisfy comic book fans and casual viewers alike. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble

December 18, 2007: I think the majority agrees that Superman IV marked the end of the series because of its horrible reception. Gene Hackman seemed reluctant to even try to be believable here there is more than one scene where it looks like he is just reciting lines. This one, like the last, dates itself a bit due to its focus on nuclear disarmament due to the Cold War. The look and effects of the Nuclear Man villain is pretty good, yet I hated the fact that he was just lip-syncing a more sinister voice. He comes off as very corny because of this, unlike the villains in Superman 2. The battle on the moon was rather weak as well. At least the series never got any worse.

January 28, 2006: After watching Superman 3, I thought that this movie was going to suck. I heard a lot of bad reviews of this movie. When I watched it this movie was more interesting than the last one. I really liked the first half of the movie. Then the movie takes a different turn when Nuclear Man is introduced. There are a lot of plot holes in this movie. The special effects are not as great as the last three because the budget got slashed in half. One thing I found disturbing was Nuclear Man taking Mariel Hemingway to space. That scene was pure dumb. This movie is not as bad compared to "Batman and Robin". Wait for the 2 disc special editon, it has the full uncut version (134 min).
