    Editorial Reviews

While never seen in the flesh, Geena Davis and Hugh Laurie lend their warm and reassuring voices to this animated produced-for-video sequel that also features Michael J. Fox reprising his role as the voice of the plucky Stuart, the mouse with the can-do attitude. Call of the Wild relates Stuart's struggle to prove to his over-protective mother that he's not a baby anymore. He hopes the family's summer vacation in the woods will be a "turning point." Mom's hopes for "lazy days and carefree nights" will be dashed when Stuart insists on joining the Lake Scouts with his video-game playing brother and supportive father. Be prepared for slapstick setbacks along the trail, and ultimate triumph as Stuart rises to the occasion to face "The Beast" (Virginia Madsen), a feline terrorizing the forest. The "toon shaded" computer generated animation is off-putting, but it does aid the suspension of disbelief required for a story about a human family with a talking mouse for a son. The dialogue strains to appeal to older audiences, but the voice cast, which includes Kevin Schon, filling in for Nathan Lane as pampered housecat Snowbell, Wayne Brady as Reeko the skunk, and Peter MacNicol as an ineffectual scoutmaster, put their hearts into it. Little kids will gladly answer the Call Donald Liebenson, Barnes & Noble
