Editorial Reviews

This DVD gift set clocks in at over 12 hours and contains three Stephen King made-for-TV films based on his novels. They include:

The Stand -- Originally aired as a television miniseries, this gripping epic of good versus evil chronicles the episodic adventures of a disparate group of people who struggle to reestablish civilization after a man-made catastrophe wipes out most of the world's population. The world abruptly ends when a deadly virus accidentally escapes from a government-sponsored biological warfare laboratory. Soon people are dropping like flies from the plague, but a few survive and find themselves strangely compelled to head into the West. Good-hearted people follow the voice of an ancient woman and head for Boulder, Colorado. Bad people follow the enigmatic Walkin' Dude to Las Vegas. It is only a matter of time before the two sides are forced into a climactic battle over the final fate of humanity.

The mini-series Golden Years centers upon a hapless old janitor who begins undergoing incredible physical changes after he is accidentally covered with experimental chemicals following a laboratory mishap. Now the government will stop at nothing to get him back.

The Langoliers is based on King's short story "Four Past Midnight," in which ten passengers on a red-eye flight from L.A. to Boston awake to find that they are the only people on the plane and, after making an emergency landing in Bangor, Maine, discover that they are the only people on the planet -- and the titular flesh-eating monsters are coming after them. August 19, 2009: The Langoliers has the basic plot to be an excellent science fiction movie, however, it is spoiled in my opinion by too much time being devoted to the mental case who wants to harm everyone. I think the average science fiction fan may find him annoying and boring. As the movie is too long anyway, they could have cut out about 80% of that part of the film. Then there is the amusing Langoliers. When they appear, they are capable of eating massive chunks of cement and buildings without gaining weight! Very conveniently they never damage the plane however. I feel that the great danger approaching should have been replaced by something totally different. Something far more believable!

Despite these criticisms, I think "The Langoliers" is still an above average science fiction because it is propped up largely by an excellent beginning. Up to the point where the plane lands for the first time had me engrossed in great mystery and suspence!

June 19, 2009: I personally bought this SK - gift set for 'The Stand', which aparantly cannot be purchased on it's own anymore. Good thing about that though, is I also got two more SK movies as a bonus... I great good Vs evil storyline which I found compelling from start to finish. The movies are very long, however can be broken down into seperate viewing times. As has been seen in recent history, man-made disasters can and do escape into the wilds and this story, in particular shows the devastation of what 'could' happen with the right mix of events.

The Stand would have to rate as one of my all time favourites in the Stephen King genre! Would recommend to all - but watch out for some scenes though, if you have a squeemish stomach - sometimes a little too much detail can be shown... Enjoy!
