This flashy techno-thriller sports a wildly improbable plot and frankly risible situations, but it moves like greased lightning and has enough action to keep any viewer’s adrenaline pumping. The story opens with three Navy “top gun” pilots -- Lieutenants Ben Gannon (Josh Lucas), Kara Wade (Jessica Biel), and Henry Purcell (Jamie Foxx) -- going through their paces in hopped-up fighter jets. But their war games are child’s play compared to the mission that will shortly put them in grave danger. A state-of-the-art, computer-guided UCAV (Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle) sustains a malfunction that overrides its program and sends it streaking toward North Korea on a bombing run. In the ensuing pursuit, Wade is forced to land behind enemy lines, and Gannon is torn between rescuing her and neutralizing the UCAV. Director Rob Cohen, whose previous movies include xXx and The Fast and the Furious, is definitely a filmmaker who always feels the need for speed, and he outdoes himself in Stealth: with so many quick cuts and rapid accelerations, we’d advise you to keep air-sickness bags at the ready while watching this puppy. Lucas, Biel, and Foxx have ample opportunities for good-natured banter and a little romance on the side, but they play their roles with just enough gravitas to lend the film some much-needed credibility. Of course, nobody expects Shakespearean drama here; Stealth never pretends to be anything but a two-hour amusement-park ride, and in that respect it succeeds admirably. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble

June 13, 2006: I loved this movie, and when it came out of theatres, I bought it. When it was in the theatres, the critics didn't like it, but I heartily disagreed. Though the plot was sometimes transparent, the acting was convincing, and it had some laughs.
