For many fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the fourth season remains the show's best. After a relatively uneven third year that ended especially well, TNG came out blazing with "Best of Both Worlds Part II," the tense, finely tuned debut episode that garnered two Emmys and set the tone for the entire season. Patrick Stewart remains the austere, sagacious Captain Jean-Luc Picard from seasons past, leading the crew in a final pitched battle against the Borg. Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) is accepted into the Starfleet, leaving the series after a final, life-threatening mission with Picard. The season shines from virtually start to finish, culminating with "Redemption," in which the Klingon Empire falls into civil war, testing Worf’s (Michael Dorn) loyalties and ultimately forcing him to resign his post. Paramount’s seven-disc box set affords several featurettes, including: "Mission Overview," in which "Q-Pid" is examined, plus a celebration of Gene Roddenberry’s 100th episode; "Selected Crew Analysis," an in-depth look at the departure of Wesley Crusher; an interview with cast members about performing stunts; "Departmental Briefing," a behind-the-scenes look at directors Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, and David Livingston; and "New Life and New Civilizations," an inside look at creating alien landscapes and shooting on location. All in all, it’s a cornucopia of wonderful science fiction -- a comprehensive vision of Trek at its best. Barnes & Noble
