    Editorial Reviews

The first and most beloved of several spin-offs derived from Gene Roddenberry's pioneering sci-fi series Star Trek, The Next Generation beams down onto DVD in a complete first-season set. All 25 episodes from the 1987-88 campaign appear in sequence on this seven-disc box set, augmented by four exclusive featurettes -- "The Beginning," "Selected Crew Analyses," "The Making of a Legend," and "Memorable Missions" -- assembled from newly shot interviews with original cast members. Season One introduces USS Enterprise captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his first mate, Commander Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes), along with other crew members portrayed by Gates McFadden, Brent Spiner, Marina Sirtis, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Denise Crosby, and Wil Wheaton. The first season doesn't represent the show at its creative peak, but it faithfully adheres to the Star Trek tradition of thoughtful, provocative science fiction, eschewing the juvenile trappings of simplistic space operas like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. The principal characters can be seen evolving from show to show, and longtime TNG fans will relive some traumatic, long-forgotten moments like the death of Lt. Tasha Yar (Crosby), who appeared in 20 of the 25 first-season episodes before being killed off. Additionally, Whoopi Goldberg makes the first of her periodic guest appearances as the enigmatic Guinan. For devotees of Star Trek in all its manifestations, this beautifully packaged box set, the first of seven that will ultimately encompass the entire run, is an absolutely essential addition to the library. Not the Best Year but Better Than You Rememberby Anonymous

November 11, 2002: No, this certainly was not the best year for TNG. However, upon viewing the entire year, it was better than I recalled. The characters, particularly Picard and Data, are wooden when compared to subsequent years. There are surprisingly few episodes that are truly awful (i.e. those with Luxana Troi). All in all, a good setup for the rest of the series.

March 29, 2002: Although there have been numerous spin-off series from the original show, none (with the possible exception of ''Enterprise'') have been truer to Gene Roddenberry's futuristic vision, than The Next Generation. The availability of this series on DVD is long overdue, but the wait was definitely worth it. The series definitely grew better with age and I am definitely looking forward to adding all 7 seasons to my collection. The extra features included in the DVD collection is just another great incentive to own this fantastic series.
