    Editorial Reviews

The 1996-97 season of this excellent Star Trek spin-off features some of the best episodes in the entire run. With the show now fully matured, writers have crafted imaginative, experimental stories that range from deadly serious to teasingly playful. Avery Brooks still heads the cast as Capt. Benjamin Sisko, but the commanding officer is increasingly relegated to the background as the variegated supporting characters more frequently take center stage. Worf (Michael Dorn) and Dax (Terry Farrell) have romantic entanglements this season, while Major Kira grapples with her unexpected pregnancy (cleverly written into the series to accommodate the real-life expectant motherhood of Nana Visitor). And a new menace, the sly, sinister Weyoun (Jeffrey Combs), comes to the fore in the late-season ramping-up to the prophesied war with the evil Dominion. Notable Season 5 episodes include "Looking for Par'mach in All the Wrong Places," "The Darkness and the Light," "Children of Time," "Trials and Tribble-ations" (in which CGI wizardry is cleverly employed to make it appear that the DS9 crew is interacting with the original Star Trek crew in footage from the earlier series' fan favorite, "The Trouble with Tribbles"), and the suspenseful season finale, "Call to Arms." Packed with entertaining and informative supplemental features -- including one on the technical challenges posed by "Tribble-ations" -- this deluxe box set belongs in the DVD library of every Deep Space Nine fan, as well as anyone who thrills to thoughtful, serious science fiction.
