The success of Willard, in which a young man trained his pet rats to kill at his command, inspired a rash of horror films featuring animals run amok, including snakes (Stanley), frogs (Frogs) and even rabbits (Night Of The Lepus). Squirm was one of the more interesting films spun off this subgenre, in which a town is terrorized by bloodthirsty worms who've been angered by a downed power line during a rainstorm. Better than it sounds, and packs a few good scares (especially if worms make you squeamish). Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

July 20, 2000: This movie is one of the finer horror flicks of the '70s and has been sadly forgotten over time. Though the idea of the movie seems somewhat unreal and maybe a poor reason to start a gore fest, the idea was based on fact. A simalar event took place in the state of Georgia (the movie's setting) a year before it was made. But it didn't go as far as causing worms to become killers. One stormy night, power lines fell and drove thousands of sandworms out of the ground in a coastal town. This was the idea for this unforgetable film. But the surge of power in the wet ground doesn't just drive them out, but sends them into a frenzy (in the movie of course)!!! I won't go any further into the plot than that, but will note a few chilling scenes. Worms coming out of a shower head, eating their way into a character's face, over runing a town. A great movie no horror fan should miss! Eye-poping effects, good acting, and good setting. Don't judge it by it's cover!
