Editorial Reviews

Nolan Funk, Tammin Sursok, and Victoria Justice headline this Nickelodeon Original Movie about a bad-boy rock star who helps a goodie-two-shoes choirgirl sing her way to the national championships. Nikko (Funk) has just been ousted from his band. He thought he was on his way to musical superstardom, but now he's got to start over from square one. Enter Courtney (Sursok), an ambitious choirgirl who's just formed a new singing group that's in desperate need of a male vocalist. At first Nikko and Courtney have little in common, though before long they've bonded in a bid to win the national championships right out from under the nose of Courtney's catty nemesis Tammi (Justice), who isn't above cheating to take top prize. March 04, 2009: Since the DVD hasn't been released yet, I'm going to review it based on the movie. It's a fun movie with a lot of singing, dancing and funny lines. All the actors do a tremendous job and seemed to enjoy themselves. It's a movie appropriate for any age from 6 all the way to teenagers. There's no bad language, violence in it. It's just a fun movie as I said with a positive message for everyone which is don't be afraid to do things the way you want to and not give in to peer pressure. The choreography is amazing. I think anyone will enjoy this movie. The extras sound like they are lots of fun. I highly recommend this movie which is sure to be a favorite in any young person's house. I can't wait to get the DVD so I can watch it whenever I want.

What Parents Need to Know

About Spectacular!

Parents need to know that this tween-targeted musical offers positive messages about self confidence, self expression, and finding friendship and inspiration in unlikely places. The main character evolves from self-absorbed rebel to a (mostly) reliable team player who's not afraid to stand up to peer pressure. Sure, the whole thing is a sanitized view of teen life (everyone's friends in the end, and, despite his missteps, Nikko gets to realize his rocker dream after all), but on the whole, it's a tween-pleasing tale with hardly any iffy content -- unless you count a teen couple's first kiss.

Families Can Talk About

Families can talk about peer pressure. What kinds of ways do teens put peer pressure on each other? Is it always obvious, or can subtle comments or gestures have just as much impact? Have you ever experienced peer pressure? How did you handle it? Has fear over your friends' reaction ever kept you from doing something you wanted to do?
