    Editorial Reviews

Filmmaker Stephen Whittaker adapts author D.H. Lawrence's simmering tale of sex, love, and family. In the years leading up to World War I, the problems faced by many families were uncannily similar to the issues that mankind would still be struggling with nearly a century later. Human relationships remain as fragile as ever, and the only constant in life seems to be a humbling sense of uncertainty. Sarah Lancashire stars in a drama detailing the anguish of first love, and the awkward confusion of first sex. Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

August 01, 2009: Sons and lovers covers an era in the British Isles that precedes WWI. Our heroine shows us the sacrifices that women faced when they had no future but to get married and produce children. She has two sons who become her entire world and focus. Both boys turn out differently and somewhat the same as you would expect from a strong mother and weak father. There is an awakening in the siblings sexually that uses women for pleasure but can produce no intimate relationship. The story takes us through the trials and tribulations of the sons as they go to work, live their adult lives, and ultimately survive or die in a world that they are ill-prepared to adequately deal with in any meaningful way. There is no contriteness or predictability. Each scene brings something new to the plot. A very insightful look at a bygone era. Brilliantly entertaining. Adult content.
