Editorial Reviews

When the Hutu nationalists raised arms against their Tutsi countrymen in the African nation of Rwanda in April of 1994, the violent uprising marked the beginning of one of the darkest times in African history. Over the course of the next 100 days, brother would turn against brother, tearing families apart and resulting in the death of almost 800,000 people. Based on actual events that occurred during the uprising, Raoul Peck's affecting war drama tells the tale of two such brothers, whose differing loyalties found them on opposing sides of the conflict, and whose lives would never be the same following this tragic turn of events. July 29, 2006: I am an American that was alive and shocked when JFK was assisnated I lived in NY when two planes hit the WYC on 9/11 but no other story continues to break my heart like this one. I have seen the beautiful children of Rwanda, held their hands and held them in my arms. And then I saw the genocide memorials at Kigali and other places, and it broke my heart. These are beautiful people, and I think there is no better movie than this one to help us realize in small part what happened in Rwanda. Hotel Rwanda was great, fantastic - but this was even better. Be aware - it is powerful and disturbing - and it should be. If it wasn't, it wouldn't be telling the truth. The country is still reeling from this devastation, as well as poverty, AIDS, and drought. If there is any way you know that you can help support this country - do it. World Vision is doing a great work.
