Editorial Reviews

A smash hit for the WB, this fresh spin on the Superman franchise asks the burning question: What was Clark Kent like in high school? As played by Tom Welling, the Teen of Steel is all too human; he may be hunkier than Dawson, but he's equally insecure. It's not easy being different in a small town -- especially if you're cursed with superpowers you don't really understand and you hanker for a gal whose folks were killed by the meteor shower that brought you to Earth. While pursuing the luscious Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk), young Clark must dodge Kryptonite rocks, sadistic jocks, and pesky mutants like "bugboy" -- not to mention his own X-ray vision, which gives him blinding headaches. Although neatly constructed, Smallville's first season is not immune to the monster-of-the-week syndrome. But like Buffy and The X-Files before it, the show lays the groundwork for story arcs destined to haunt future seasons. Particularly compelling is Clark's relationship with Lex Luther (Michael Rosenbaum), son of the town tycoon, whose life he saves in the opening episode. As every fan knows, young Lex will grow up to be the archest of Superman villains. But in Smallville, his fate is by no means sealed. Luther's struggle to escape the grip of his evil father and salvage his own humanity is a superheroic battle in itself. Cree McCree, Barnes & Noble
