This groundbreaking series, created and largely written by Alan Ball, showed no lessening of quality as Season 3 opened; and the 13 episodes of 2003 brilliantly expanded upon themes and characterizations established in previous years. The first show finds the venerable undertaking firm of Fisher and Sons now renamed Fisher and Diaz, with former "gofer" Rico (Freddy Rodriguez) asserting himself rather forcefully. Nate (Peter Krause) and Lisa (Lili Taylor) try to make a go of their relationship, but his dalliance with Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) precipitates a split-up that has tragic consequences. Another Fisher scion, David (Michael C. Hall), encounters romantic difficulties when outside pressures affect his partnership with Keith. Late in the season, the entire family is shocked when matriarch Ruth (Frances Conroy), after a whirlwind courtship, decides to marry George Sibley (James Cromwell in a recurring guest-star role). All in all, it's a tumultuous year for the Fishers, whose travails make for uncommonly gripping drama, thanks to Ball and such talented directors as actress Kathy Bates, who shows remarkable talent in her outings behind the camera.
