Editorial Reviews

When Oscar-winning screenwriter Alan Ball created this series for HBO, he determined at the outset that nothing about Six Feet Under -- from its funeral home setting to the unorthodox relationships between its main characters -- would smack of the predictable. That was especially true of the final season, which aired in 2005 and delivered surprise after surprise. There were a few episodes we could call "stiffs," but series television has rarely provided moments such as those found in the 12 installments collected in this box. The season opener, "A Coat of Primer," gets things off to a rocky start when George Sibley (James Cromwell) returns from the hospital to find wife, Ruth (Frances Conroy), emotionally ill prepared to cope with his illness. The Fisher family continues to stumble along, with Nate (Peter Krause) and Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) dealing with her troubled pregnancy as best they can. Then, with just three episodes left in the entire series, one of the most jarring and unexpected twists in the history of episodic TV occurs. Ball's determination to avoid the predictable thus results in an audacious downward spiral that sends an already downbeat show into the depths of despair. The final episode, "Everyone's Waiting," ties up all the loose ends -- more or less -- and brings to a satisfying conclusion one of the most remarkable experiments in the medium's history. Whether you were just a casual viewer of Six Feet Under or a devoted fan, this season is the one to get on DVD: it's unforgettable on multiple levels. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble

August 03, 2007: I wasn't sure when I started this series but it is captivating. The final 5th season was fantastic. The writers of this show know how it should be done. Wrapping up 5 seasons without the typical boring where we are now was done in a style that surprised me but I could hear Nate say what else did you expect? If you ever watched this series you have to get this season. Kudos to the writers and actors.

March 20, 2007: The final episode of Six Feet Under is absolutely the best I have ever seen in my life. I laughed and I cried. I have often been disappointed with series finales, but this finale was unbearably genious.
