    Editorial Reviews

A star is born in Shrek 2! It's Puss in Boots, voiced with suave and swashbuckling bravado by Antonio Banderas. Not since the 1947 Warner Bros. cartoon "Little Orphan Airedale" has the "soulful eyes routine" been used to such devastatingly funny effect. Puss, a would-be assassin hired to dispatch our not-so-jolly green ogre, effortlessly steals every scene he's in. He also revitalizes the Shrek franchise. Hopefully, a spin-off is in the works (until then, he hosts the bonus features portion of the DVD edition). Shrek 2 continues Shrek and Fiona's fairy-tale romance beyond "happy-ever-after." The original voice cast return in their triumphant signature roles: Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz as the honeymooners, and Eddie Murphy as the loquacious but lovable Donkey. New to the story are Fiona's disapproving royal parents (John Cleese, Julie Andrews) and the vengeful Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders), who schemes for her son, Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), to take Fiona for his wife. While not as emotionally satisfying as the original, Shrek 2 is just as funny; brimming with in-jokes, pop-culture references, and movie and TV spoofs ranging from The Little Mermaid to Cops. Having thoroughly punked Disney in the first film, Shrek 2 skewers Hollywood and Beverly Hills, rendered here as "Far, Far Away," a riot of boutiques (Abercrombie & Witch, Pewtery Barn) and red-carpet galas. Shrek 2 -- 2004's biggest box-office hit -- invites repeated viewings to catch all the jokes. But it's the extras that truly make this DVD an enchanting, play-it-again experience. Topping the dance party on the first Shrek DVD is the talent contest "Far, Far Away Idol," starring the one and only Simon Cowell. Donald Liebenson, Barnes & Noble

August 27, 2006: This is one of most ingenious films I've seen it years, and it is one of the greatest sequels of all-time. The cast is excellent, the animation is truly breathtaking, and the story has heart, truth, and soul to it. I really enjoyed it.
