The sophomore effort of writer-director-star Edward Burns shows considerable maturation of cinematic technique while retaining the offhanded sprightliness that distinguished his first film, The Brothers McMullen. He and McMullen alumnus Mike McGlone once again play squabbling siblings; this time around, Ed debates the feasibility of marrying girlfriend Maxine Bahns, who snagged him on the rebound after he caught former flame Cameron Diaz cheating on him. Mike, a cocky yuppie with more money than sense, avoids canoodling with sexually frustrated Jennifer Aniston so he'll have enough energy to surreptitiously bump uglies with...Cameron Diaz. Character actor John Mahoney scores bigtime as their cuckolded father, who regularly dispenses romantic advice of dubious merit. Working with a bigger budget and more generous production appurtenances -- not to mention costars and supporting players from mainstream Hollywood -- Burns successfully avoids the sophomore jinx with another distinctive film.
