August 15, 2009: Anyone who has enjoyed Bernard Cornwell's Richard Sharpe books will enjoy these DVDs. If you haven't read the books, these films stand on their own. Each episode is like a feature film. The production values are excellent and the plots stay pretty true to the novels with a few deviations, none detrimental to the storytelling. Sean Bean is Richard Sharpe come to life in all of his complexity. A ferocious soldier in battle, admired by his men, trusted by the Duke of Wellington, with a nobility of spirit and inate gentility despite his ignoble beginnings. Daragh O'Malley as Sharpe's right hand man,Sergeant Patrick Harper,is fierce in his loyalty to Sharpe. An imposing man to be reckoned with, yet with an underlying humor and sweetness. It is a joy to watch this friendship develop amidst the horror of war. It is especially enjoyable to watch Sean Bean in the most heroic role of his career after watching him play so many villains so successfully. The supporting cast is superb and there are many famous faces appearing throughout the series in guest roles. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys good swashbuckling historical fiction.

    I Also Recommend: Sharpe's Sword, Sharpe's Revenge.
