Editorial Reviews

British soldier Richard Sharpe -- the central character in Bernard Cornwell's bestselling adventure novels -- is embodied to a polished brass button onscreen by Sean Bean, whose work in the 14-telefilm British series is collected here in a handsome wooden keepsake box. Beginning with 1993's Sharpe's Rifles and continuing through Sharpe's Waterloo in 1997, the productions further cemented the Sheffield-born actor's status as one of the screen's most rugged presences. A feast for action fans, the Sharpe saga takes place against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, which provided ample opportunity for a daring and ambitious member of Wellington’s army to rise through the ranks, as Sharpe dramatically does. This extraordinary package -- released in anticipation of Bean's return to the role in the miniseries Sharpe’s Challenge -- includes the original 14 film installments and a bonus DVD, Sharpe: the Legend (1997), as well as a reproduction of an antique military map from the period. The Sharpe's Eagle letter opener included with the set is finished in pewter, matching the solid-pewter closures on the box. Barnes & Noble

November 30, 2006: I enjoy everything about Horatio Hornblower and his era. Sharpe novels occur during the Napoleonic wars too. I took a calculated risk and purchased this set of Sharpe DVDs. The box looks like a case of ammunition and there is a map from the era and a letter opener resembling the "French Eagle" Sharpe captures, thus creating the legend of the fearless warrior. It is a surprisingly well made series. Only one of the episodes was a little too corny for me. Since the action takes place over 13 episodes, there is time to build characters and their relationships. The protagonists in the series are compelling and enjoyable. Most of the episodes seemed above par for a made-for-TV production. Sean Bean is believable as the flawed, but loyal Richard Sharpe. This is the only time I ever saw him portray a "good guy". We are passing the series around to different family members and everyone is very pleased with the quality and momentum of the movies. I am just beginning to read the books and I would recommend those to Hornblower fans as well.
