Full Product DetailsFormer burlesque comic and character actor Phil Silvers finally achieved stardom when in 1955 he was cast as the perpetually conniving Sergeant Ernie Bilko, a peacetime soldier stationed at fictional Fort Baxter with a platoon of bumbling misfits. In episode after episode -- 18 of which are included in this three-disc set -- Bilko and his charges (played by Harvey Lembeck, Allan Melvin, Joe E. Ross, Herbie Faye, and Maurice Gosfield, among others) schemed to get out of work or make a fast buck on the side. The fast-talking Bilko usually wound up outsmarting himself, but occasionally he came out on top; you never knew which it would be until the episode's closing moments. The shows culled for this collection are mostly great ones, but they aren't the only reasons to buy this box set: numerous extras include footage of Silvers performing at a Friars Club roast for Humphrey Bogart and appearing on variety shows. Odd Couple stars Tony Randall and Jack Klugman pay tribute to Silvers in a special intro filmed for TV Land repeats. Plus: numerous stars, some of them former cast members, supply audio commentaries, including Dick Van Dyke, George Kennedy, Allan Melvin, and Larry Storch. This set will be manna from heaven for aficionados of vintage TV sitcoms, but even if you're not familiar with Silvers or Bilko there's plenty here to amuse you. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble
