Catherine Breillat's Sex Is Comedy concerns a female film director, Jeanne (Anne Parillaud), who is attempting to film a sex scene in her new movie. Complicating the already emotionally difficult shoot is the fact that Jeanne and her lead actor (Grégoire Colin) are sexually involved. The scene being shot echoes with a scene in Breillat's previous film, Fat Girl, adding to the supposed "reality" of the situations presented in the film. Roxane Mesquida rounds out the cast as the actress playing the 15-year-old in the scene being filmed. Sex Is Comedy was screened during the Director's Fortnight at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide All Movie Guide

    A noble attempt, but fails.by Clete_Purcel

February 16, 2009: Anne Parillaud, as the director in the film, is somewhat interesting but otherwise this film falls flat. It is tedious and overblown melodrama. The actors are not engaging and neither is the story. Or maybe I'm just getting too old for this. If you want to see a good French film about the drama and conflict of the making of a commercial motion picture, see DAY FOR NIGHT by Francois Truffaut.?

August 09, 2006: As usual, this film has the independent flavor of a french film: sex disguised as art. I don't think I am prejudiced against the French, it's just when you are dealing with sex, just put out. Not to say the male lead didn't do that!
