Editorial Reviews

Produced in 1985, Follow That Bird is a delightful curio recalling the days when Big Bird ruled the roost and Elmo -- the little red monster now unofficially recognized as the star of the PBS Kids show -- was but a face in the climactic crowd scene. This first-ever Sesame Street movie finds Big Bird on an unlikely exodus, sent by a meddling social worker to live with his "own kind": the bird-brained Dodos. Needless to say, Big Bird does not fit in, and so he embarks on a cross-country odyssey back home to Sesame Street, with his friends in anxious pursuit. The simple message is that home is where the heart is and that it is nicer to live happily among all kinds. Celebrity cameos include Waylon Jennings, Chevy Chase, and Sandra Bernhard -- who is hilarious as a waitress at the Don't Drop In, where they really toss the salad! SCTV veterans Dave Thomas and Joe Flaherty turn up as the Sleaze Brothers, who shanghai Big Bird for their run-down circus. (It's worth noting that a scene in which Big Bird is painted blue and exhibited as the Bluebird of Happiness may upset some kids.) Like the original Muppet Movie, this is Grade-A family entertainment with beloved characters and upbeat songs to delight children, plus clever writing and in-jokes (including an homage to the crop-dusting scene in North by Northwest) to amuse adults. Old-school Sesame Street fun for the whole family...by CardinalBiggles

March 31, 2009: "Follow That Bird" represents something of a last hurrah for the 'old-school' era of "Sesame Street" -- most of the core group of human residents from the 1970s and 80s make appearances, and all the Muppets are performed by their original performers, including the late Jim Henson and Richard Hunt. And of course, there was no Elmo at this point (though the puppet that would eventually become Elmo appears in a window in the crowd scene at the end of the film).

The story is relatively straightforward: Big Bird is relocated to Oceanview, Illinois by do-gooding social worker Miss Finch (Sally Kellerman), so he can live with a bird family, the Dodos. Unhappy in his new home and missing his friends from Sesame Street, Big Bird runs away in the middle of the night, and it becomes a race to see who will get him first: the Sesame Street gang, or Miss Finch. Thrown into the mix are the Sleaze Brothers (Dave Thomas and Joe Flaherty), a pair of carnival-running con men who want to kidnap Big Bird so they'll have a hot act for their run-down funfair.

As with "Sesame Street" the show, the film works on multiple levels, assuring that both kids and parents will be entertained. There's various celebrity (circa 1985) guest appearances, including Chevy Chase, John Candy, and Waylon Jennings. There's also a great homage to "North by Northwest." Be sure to watch for Oscar and Maria's dinner at the Don't Drop Inn, a grouch diner where they toss the salad... literally.

This review was written about the DVD Remastered / Special Edition / Anniversary Edition edition.
