Editorial Reviews

The recipient of seven Academy Award nominations, this film version of Jane Austen's classic 1811 novel stars Emma Thompson as Elinor Dashwood. With her mother and sisters, Elinor struggles financially after the death of her father, who bequeathed the Dashwood estate to his oafish son by an earlier marriage. While sorting out the family's affairs, the shy, self-sacrificing Elinor secretly falls for her stepbrother-in-law, Edward Ferrars (Hugh Grant), a sensitive, well-educated bachelor who cannot court her because of his foolhardy youthful engagement to the greedy Lucy Steele (Imogen Stubbs). The grateful Dashwoods are offered a modest country home by family friends, which they accept. Once relocated, Elinor's brash, spirited sister Marianne (Kate Winslet) falls for a dashing local, John Willoughby (Greg Wise), a womanizer who nevertheless seems to share her affections. A prominent neighbor, Colonel Brandon (Alan Rickman), also falls in love with Marianne, but she is oblivious to the older man's affections. Eventually, Willoughby fails Marianne, breaking her heart, until she realizes Brandon's feelings. When Edward's family disowns him, Lucy marries his brother instead, leaving him free to pursue an exultant Elinor. Thompson won the film's sole OscarŪ for her screenplay adaptation of Austen's novel. Sense and Sensibility - One of the best adaptations to a book that I can remember!by Anonymous

October 23, 2009: Well of course there are others but this is one of my favorites. It starts with the death of Mr. Dashwood and his step daughters Elinor and Marianne (played by Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet), where one likes Edward (Hugh Grant) and the other likes Willoby (Greg Wise) but Col. Brandon (Alan Rickman) likes her as well creating a sort of love triangle if you will. Surprised that Emma herself wrote the screenplay and played one of the main characters. She, Kate and everyone else did a fantastic job. You might notice though that some of the actors and actresses appeared in a Harry Potter movie. Coincidence? The settings are nice, especially the costumes creating an authentic look of that setting and era. I always heard of this movie but never seen the whole thing...until now. I'm glad I did for its a nice, sweet yet at times sad film. The ending was nice. Jane Austen is quite the author and how she had create such interesting and memorable characters in all her books. Recommend this film whether you are a fan of Jane Austen and her books or not, its that good.

I Also Recommend: Pride & Prejudice, Pride & Prejudice, Little Women, Pride and Prejudice.

October 07, 2009: This movie adaptation of Jane Austin's "Sense and Sensibility" is just marvelous. Emma Thompson's enchanting screenplay is so close to the novel, and that's such a rare treat in a movie version. Kate Winslet is especially wonderful as Marianne Dashwood. She's completely sweet, young and innocent. Her heartbreak at the hands of handsome and dashing Willoughby is extremely powerful and emotional. It's an all around well acted movie. Lots of wonderful performances. This is acutally a very funny movie and so beautifully shot by Director Ang Lee. Every aspect of the movie is wonderful. A must-have for any Jane Austen fan.
