    November 10, 2007: Not to say that "Saw III" isn't a good movie. It's worth a watch, but it's slipped quite a ways from the rung on the ladder of horror that "Saw" reached. I'll start with my complaints. First, was it really necessary to show Eric escaping his established "Saw II" death, only to be killed again? And why did we need to see construction of the bathroom trap from "Saw"? We can connect those dots ourselves. All these scenes did was waste time. Also, most of the traps in the film, such as the freezer room, lost their appeal simply because it was up to someone else to rescue them. They didn't have to undergo any physical or emotional pain to escape, and it wasn't up to them whether they lived or died. Thus, the rack, although scary, isn't as engraved in my memory as much as, say, the death mask. Also, the movie dwelled far too much on the charmless scenes with Jigsaw and Lynn. The fat could have been trimmed there, as well. However, there were a few positives. The first two traps "Troy's and Kerry's" capture exactly why I loved "Saw", and laid a nice premise for the rest of the movie. Oh, one more thing: I'm a bit concerned about the gratuity of this movie. "Saw" was barely gory, which I appreciated, but this film is just despicable. Was it really necessary to linger on the nudity of the freezer room? Most of the gore, additionally, is totally unrelastic. "How is it that, when the judge was shot, there was brain matter splattered all over the side of his head that the bullet entered?) "Saw III" was good, but not too great. Watch just to see how the series plays out.

    April 12, 2007: Continues exactly where the second left off with a painful look at what becomes of Matthew. Afterwards we find new victims in a new and inventive game where it turns out Jigsaw has something up his sleeve for both the victims and his new "apprentice" including as always a revelation and shocking twist at the end.
