Like a Latino Bonnie Raitt, Carlos Santana rose from middling veneration to out-and-out Grammy superstardom on the strength of his multi-platinum Supernatural album. Those who are only familiar with the guitarist/bandleader from his hit CD, though, are in for a treat with the new video release Supernatural Live. For as longtime fans of his silky smooth yet searing sound know, "live" Santana is an even more wonderful thing than canned Santana. Like the album, Supernatural Live is an all-star affair, with performing support from Lauryn Hill, Dave Matthews, Carter Beauford, Sarah McLachlan, the Product G&B, Cee-Lo (of Goodie Mob), plus Wayne Shorter, Chester Thompson, and Rob Thomas. The band delivers spirited versions of eight of the CD's 13 tracks (missing are "Corazon Espinado," "Wishing It Was," "Faro," "Calling," and "Primavera"). In place of the missing songs are wonderful versions of Santana favorites from the rock legend's stellar past, including a "Gypsy Queen"/"Oye Como Va" medley that is -- as always -- an exhilarating blast. The DVD adds such goodies as behind-the-scenes footage, short interviews, and a featurette, but the main draws remain Carlos Santana, his drum-tight band, and music that gets you moving.
