Editorial Reviews

Sanctuary follows the adventures of the beautiful, enigmatic and always surprising Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), her new recruit, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne) and her fearless daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup). Together they track down, study, and protect the strange and often terrifying creatures that secretly populate our world. Although dismissed as monstrous figments of our imaginations and the stuff of our nightmares, Magnus recognizes that the world is full of nature's mistakes and triumphs. And she has the spectacular proof that they are indeed real. For some "abnormals," Magnus is their protector. For a dangerous few, she is their captor. Season 1 (2008-9) of this SyFy series also includes an arsenal of exclusive extras including: audio commentaries on all 13 episodes with cast and crew including Amanda Tapping, creator Damian Kindler, director Martin Wood and more; three making-of featurettes ("Welcome to the Sanctuary," "Sanctuary Residents," and "Sanctuary Visual Effects"); the original Sanctuary webisodes (which provided the inspiration for the television series); a bloopers reel; and a behind-the-scenes photo gallery. November 19, 2009: Sanctuary Season One was awesome to watch on SyFy when it first came out. The series is excellent; it begins to dabble into a form of sci-fi we haven't experienced yet ... that of tetraology and cryptology. Those fields have been played with in the animated stream before, but there hasn't been once it was dabbled with (in my recollections) as a mainstream series. Amanda Tapping's Magnus is a refreshing character to see her play versus that of Colonel Carter for so many years. Robin Dunne and Emilie Ullerup make wonderful additions also. Guest stars have been great, and it's good to see Christopher Heyerdal stretch his wings as BOTH John Druitt & Big Foot. I also like the premise of how these types of immortals came to be ... as a science project to see how vampire blood would interact with human. In short, it is a breath of fresh air to not have vampires or immortals slicing each other's heads off every moment of a series. Even so, it was nice to see Peter Wingfield (Methos from the Highlander Series) as a guest star for several episodes. Overall, it is good to see a sci-fi series with a new premise that is doing well on Friday nights.

I Also Recommend: Battlestar Galactica - The Plan, Caprica: Pilot, Doctor Who - The Next Doctor - 2008 Christmas Special.
