Genndy's Roundtable; Genndy's New Projects; Deleted scene; Samurai Jack promos
Full Product DetailsFollowing his work on the animated hits Dexter's Laboratory and Powerpuff Girls, Genndy Tartakovsky went on to create a series that redefined traditional attitudes toward children's animation. Premiering on the Cartoon Network in 2001, Samurai Jack told the story of Jack (the voice of Phil LaMarr), the samurai son of the emperor, who must save his people from the evil wizard Aku (Makoto "Mako" Iwamatsu). During a battle, Jack is banished through a time portal to the future, where he arrives with only his powerful sword to protect him. Over the course of the series, Jack must fight to return to his world and destroy Aku. It's a simple premise for an animated program, but Tartakovsky took it to new levels using a unique storytelling concept: absence of dialogue. Many episodes told the story simply using lush animation, visuals, and sound effects, which quickly transformed a typical kids' cartoon into something adults wanted to watch. Ranging from bright, colorful foreign worlds to dark and gritty landscapes, the series captured Jack's loneliness and isolation as he attempted to return home. While never overtly violent, the swordplay may be a little intense for younger viewers. And now, the three-time Emmy Award-winning series concludes in 2003-4's Season 4, with all 13 episodes and bonus features including commentary and a featurette on how to draw the characters.
