    Editorial Reviews

Few performers hypnotize an audience as effectively as Sade. Like Billie Holiday, the Nigerian-born diva employs a sharp, seductive vocal wisp that hooks ears, eyes, and hearts in communal anticipation of her next note. The Lovers Live concert in support of her superb Lovers Rock album, caught here on DVD and VHS, showcases her extraordinary refinement. There's less glitz here than one has come to expect from contemporary divas, but the adoring fans seem not to miss it at all, particularly during such velvety showstoppers as "Smooth Operator" and "Pearls." For the tour, Sade assembled a crack backing band, led by longtime collaborators Paul Spencer Denman, Stuart Matthewman, and Andrew Hale, who’ve been with her since the beginning and have helped transform her ambient, cool, jazz-inflected early work by fusing it with modern soul’s hip-hop beats. All of Rock is here, alongside much of her bewitching earlier material, like "Sweetest Taboo" and "Your Love Is King." Sade’s sensual, quiet-storm method has moved on to a different groove, and the results are close to breathtaking. Tracks are as follows:

  • Cherish the Day
  • Your Love Is King
  • Somebody Already
  • Broke My Heart
  • Cherry Pie
  • Pearls
  • Everyword
  • Smooth Operator
  • Red Eye
  • Jezebel
  • Kiss of Life
  • Slave Song
  • Sweetest Gift
  • Sweetest Taboo
  • Lovers Rock
  • Immigrant
  • Paradise
  • King of Sorrow
  • No Ordinary Love
  • By Your Side
  • Flow
  • Is It a Crime
  • It's Only Love That Gets You Through

August 14, 2003: The reviews listed below really say it all. I think that ''Mixed Feelings'' should check out her 1994 release, ''Sade: Live'' for an ever-so-slightly younger, yet equally sexy Sade, who stands out from her backup more so on that release. While ''Lovers Live'' is truly outstanding, you HAVE to see ''Live'' if you are a Sade addict, as we all should be. What is superior in ''Lovers Live''?...the bonus material. Excerpts of interviews with fans before her 2001 tour will have you rolling in the aisles as they express in various ways the joy that her music brings to all who love her. Check it out for yourself.

March 11, 2003: A must have for any music lover. This is what R&B music is suppose to be. A touch of soul, a dash of Jazz and a whole lot of talent. That's SADE and her band Sweetback.
