Editorial Reviews

The TV courtroom classic Rumpole of the Bailey debuted on Thames Television in 1978 before crossing the Pond and showing up on Mystery!, where its considerable charms made it a PBS favorite. Leo McKern portrays Horace Rumpole, the gruff yet lovable British defense barrister from the John Mortimer novels, who is constantly butting heads with and ruffling the feathers of the criminal court’s stuffy officials. Using a wry sense of humor, Rumpole often makes fun of his colleagues, such Old Bailey denizens as the pompous barrister Claude Erskine-Brown (Julian Curry) and the blustering Justice Bullingham (Bill Fraser). Rumpole is fond of taking on clients accused of heinous crimes, from attempted rape to murder. But he also has a habit of championing those he thinks aren't getting a fair shake: a porn publisher, a father suspected of devil worship, and a man accused of inciting a riot using racist speech. Though a brilliant lawyer, Rumpole chooses to remain true to his morals rather than taking the easy road to the top, like many of his fellow barristers. Unfortunately, this doesn't always suit his socially prominent wife, Hilda, (Peggy Thorpe-Bates), whom Rumpole refers to as "She Who Must Be Obeyed." Quick-witted dialogue is a series trademark, as are the social issues that Rumpole comments on. This Set 1 collection contains all 12 episodes from Series 1 and 2: "Rumpole and the Younger Generation"; "Rumpole and the Alternative Society"; "Rumpole and the Honourable Member"; "Rumpole and the Married Lady"; "Rumpole and the Learned Friends"; "Rumpole and the Heavy Brigade"; "Rumpole and the Man of God"; "Rumpole and the Case of Identity"; "Rumpole and the Show Folk"; "Rumpole and the Fascist Beast"; "Rumpole and the Course of True Love"; and "Rumpole and the Age of Retirement." The set also includes the movie-length special "Rumpole's Return." Christina Urban, Barnes & Noble
