Editorial Reviews

One of the most distinctive vocalists in the history of rock and roll, Roy Orbison was in the midst of a well-deserved comeback in 1987 when he performed this special concert for television, beautifully filmed in black and white and featuring some famous friends helping him out. Orbison is joined onstage by Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, k.d. lang, Jackson Browne, Tom Waits, and T.Bone Burnett as he sings "Oh, Pretty Woman," "Only the Lonely," "It's Over," "Blue Bayou," "Crying," "In Dreams," "Running Scared," and ten other classics. September 13, 2009: First, let me introduce myself because I'll admit to being a bit weird. I'm one of those people who didn't "get" popular music. When everyone was listening to Elvis, I was listening to Dave Brubeck because I'd happened to buy the record and liked what I heard. By the time The Beatles were invading, I had become aware of Elvis because I had read about him, heard him -- but it was all past tense.

So, when Roy Orbison was making the scene, well that's about the same time as Elvis, and if I didn't... Hopefully, you get the picture.

So here I am, past middle age (unless I live to be more than 120) and I've been enjoying catching up. On this score, my wife helped.

I bought this DVD/CD set as a gift to my wife. I knew she'd love it because one day I heard Orbison's unique voice and my wife was craning her neck trying to get into the picture on her computer. It turned out she was watching a clip from the DVD on YouTube. To my credit (let me show off here), I recognized Bonnie Rait and KD Lang as the backup singers. Stories of how Orbison had given them their breaks were thrown my way while my wife jumped from clip to clip on YouTube.

I made a note to myself that this would be a wonderful gift for her, and when her birthday came, I bought it.

Conclusion: I have enjoyed it myself tremendously. Because of Orbison's broad reach and popularity, it has served me well as remedial education in popular culture.

PS to media companies: Any thoughts about this or anything else being ripped off because it on the web for free are short-sighted in the extreme. The free samples sold the product to me.

May 30, 2009: Most of the Roy Orbison I've seen is the same canned re-doing of the same songs over and over. Not the case with this one. Great collection of famous musicians sitting in to do Roy's songs with him and they're all allowed to do their own jams during the songs. Everybody seemed to check their egos at the door and they all shine along with Roy.
