Editorial Reviews

The seminal road trip drama Route 66 returns for its second season (1961-62) in this 8-disc, 32-episode set. Famous for its catchy Nelson Riddle theme song, intriguing characters, great writing, and notable guest stars, Route 66 was one of the most highly rated shows of the era and helped cement the Chevrolet Corvette's status as an American icon. The coast-to-coast adventures continue for Tod Stiles (Martin Milner), an intellectual who has led a privileged and sheltered life, and Buz Murdock (George Maharis), a tough young man -- raised in New York's Hell's Kitchen -- who has struggled his entire life just to survive. The duo encounter folks good and bad, and even drift into the occasional romance as they travel the nation's primary east-west artery: from shipyards to chicken farms, cattle ranches to hospitals, courtrooms to amusement parks, wrestling rings to religious retreats, and even a wild animal park -- wherever there were kicks to be had. The sophomore season's list of guest stars includes Robert Redford, Douglas Fairbanks, Robert Duvall, Suzanne Pleshette, Lon Chaney Jr., John Astin, James Caan, Lee Marvin, Martin Sheen, Ed Asner, DeForest Kelley, Marion Ross, Peter Graves, Jack Warden, Tuesday Weld, and Julie Newmar, among others.
