Initially conceived as a theatrical feature, but originally aired on television in the United States, Robin Hood puts slight, but effective, twists on the legendary tale. Starring Patrick Bergin in the title role, the film follows Robin and his group of bandits as they fight Prince John and save Maid Marion (Uma Thurman). This version is a little grittier than both Errol Flynn's classic movie or the contemporary extravaganza starring Kevin Costner, since Bergin is quite down-to-earth and Thurman makes Marion into a brat, not a helpless maiden. However, these qualities and the stately photography make the film quite entertaining, and it easily equals Costner's version, even if it can't match Flynn's timeless movie. April 20, 2009: I fell in love with this Robin Hood about 10 years ago. It was released the same year as the Costner version, but didn't hit the theaters because the big names on that one edged out Berger/Thurman. Two Robin Hoods in one year was too much for Hollywood.

That is very much our loss. This version does an excellent job of showing the socio-racial gap between Saxon & Norman, displays a clever wit, and provides us with strong female characters without defeminizing them. Costuming is fantastic, accents are believable (Is Uma a brit? She's fooled me in this film.), and plot is a good blend of the historic and legend. If you have a true appreciation of the Robin Hood legend this is a must see.

I believe this is the only version Mel Brooks did *not* parody in Men in Tights.. partially because it was obscure, but I like to think it's one of the most compelling versions put to film and he didn't want to detract from that.

October 16, 2002: I thought this version of Robinhood was very sensual and romantic - the Chemistry between Maid Marion and Robinhood was... Wow! Uma Thurman gave Maid Marion ''depth'' and was such a naughty lady. Patrick Bergin - Oh My! What a gorgeous man! Great movie.Too bad it wasn't more widely acclaimed. Denise OhHoneyPie
